About us

The Nonfiction Room is a collaborative mentoring practice created by Tiffany Watt Smith and Katherine Angel, correspondence address 259-260 Hardess Street, London, SE24 0HN.

Mentoring services are provided independently by the individual mentor you choose to work with. Tiffany Watt Smith and Katherine Angel each operate as sole traders and are individually responsible for the mentoring services they provide, including invoicing and payment.

By booking a mentoring session, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.

Our mentoring

Mentoring is designed to support the development of literary nonfiction projects through thoughtful conversation, critical feedback and practical guidance.

Our mentoring is distinct from copy-editing, manuscript assessment, literary representation, publishing consultancy, legal advice or therapeutic counselling.

While we aim to help every writer develop their work as fully as possible, we cannot guarantee publication, representation, commercial success or any particular outcome.

Booking and payment

Bookings are made directly with the individual mentor you choose to work with.

Once a mentoring session or programme has been agreed, your mentor will issue an invoice by email.

Payment should be made by bank transfer using the details provided on the invoice. Unless otherwise agreed, payment must be received before the mentoring session takes place.

For three and six-month mentoring programmes, we offer payment spread across two or three invoices respectively.

Preparing for your session

Please send your manuscript and any supporting material at least seven days before your session unless otherwise agreed.

We will normally read up to 10,000–15,000 words in advance.

Cancellations and rescheduling

If you need to reschedule, please give at least 48 hours’ notice.

Where sufficient notice is given, we will do our best to arrange an alternative appointment.

Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice are normally non-refundable unless exceptional circumstances apply. We do appreciate that sometimes life events are unpredictable. If you cancel a one-off session and do not reschedule it, but we have already read your work, we will charge a reduced rate of two-thirds of our fee.

If your mentor needs to cancel a session, you will be offered either a full refund or an alternative appointment.

Mentoring programmes

Where a mentoring programme includes multiple sessions, these should normally be completed within twelve months of purchase unless otherwise agreed.

Optional written report

If purchased, an optional written report will normally be provided within 7 days of your mentoring session.

The report summarises and develops the discussion from the mentoring session and is intended to complement—not replace—the mentoring conversation. It includes the option for you to send a brief follow up email with any questions.

Intellectual property

You retain full ownership and copyright of all material you share with us.

Any written reports, teaching materials or resources provided by your mentor remain the intellectual property of that mentor unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Confidentiality

We treat your writing, ideas and personal information as confidential.

We will not share your work with third parties without your permission unless required to do so by law.

Generative AI use

We do not use generative AI in our mentoring. We ask clients to be transparent about the ways they might choose to use AI in their writing.

Limitation of liability

Mentoring is provided with reasonable skill and care.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, each mentor’s liability is limited to the fees paid for the mentoring services they have personally provided.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where such exclusion would be unlawful.

Governing law

These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

Any disputes shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
