Who we are
The Nonfiction Room is a collaborative mentoring practice created by Tiffany Watt Smith and Katherine Angel.
Each mentor operates independently as a sole trader. The mentor you work with is responsible for the personal information you provide in connection with your mentoring.
What information we collect
We may collect:
your name
email address
billing information required for invoicing
details about your writing project
manuscripts, proposals and supporting documents that you choose to share
correspondence relating to your mentoring
Our website may also collect limited technical information through cookies.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
arrange mentoring sessions
communicate with you
prepare for mentoring conversations
issue invoices and maintain accounting records
provide optional written reports
comply with our legal and tax obligations
We will never sell your personal information to third parties.
Manuscripts and project materials
As part of the mentoring process, you may choose to share manuscripts, proposals, notes and other project materials with us.
We store these materials securely and use them only for the purpose of preparing for and delivering your mentoring.
We won’t share your work with the other Nonfiction Room mentor, unless you give permission. If you would prefer us not to discuss your writing project in general with the other Nonfiction Room mentor, please let us know. We will never share your work with anyone else without your permission unless required by law. We do not use generative AI in any part of the reading or mentoring process, and will not upload your materials to it.
Unless you, the client, choose otherwise, we will permanently delete digital copies of your manuscripts and project materials within 30 days of the completion of your final mentoring session or programme.
We do not retain copies of your work for our own records, teaching, research or any other purpose.
If you would like your materials deleted sooner, please let us know and we will do so wherever reasonably practicable.
Payments
We issue invoices directly and accept payment by bank transfer.
We retain only the financial information necessary for accounting, tax and business record-keeping purposes.
Third-party services
Our website is hosted by Squarespace. Our mailing list is hosted by Kit..
We may also use online meeting software such as Zoom or Google Meet and email providers to communicate with clients.
These providers process information in accordance with their own privacy policies.
Newsletter
If you choose to subscribe to our newsletter, we will collect your email address in order to send occasional updates about mentoring, upcoming workshops and news from The Nonfiction Room.
We use Kit to manage our mailing list. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us directly.
How long we keep personal information
We keep personal information only for as long as necessary to provide our services, comply with legal obligations and maintain appropriate financial records.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to request access to your personal information, ask us to correct inaccurate information, request deletion where appropriate, restrict certain types of processing and make a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the personal information you provide.
However, no internet transmission or electronic storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The latest version will always appear on this website.
